I finally opened the main door to the allotment today and was greeted by a combination of mutant weeds and rubbish.
I expected the plots to be overgrown but this is ridiculous. It’s not just the weeds but the amount of garbage that’s underneath them that’s shocking. How a local council can allow this to happen is beyond me, i mean surely the way to attract new tenants is to dig the plots over when not in use, turf the rubbish out and then they’ll have people fighting over them. This explains why i wasn’t given a key the view the plot prior to taking it on and was given a dodgy photocopied plan of the site.
The images don’t really tell the full story and i’ll have to get onto the council to help remove the rubbish. From what i am told the rates are the most expensive in the country and so i’m effectively cleaning up their mess and paying them for the privilege.
So it looks like i’m now going to have to re-think my plans for this plot and i’ll be lucky if i get anything planted in 2008. Still it was a lovely clear warm day and the plot seemed nice and peaceful, had friendly neighbours either side and so should be a great place to come in the spring and summer and try to grow a few veggies and flowers…eventually!!
