Got up Saturday morning to a pleasant amount of sunshine.
I was surprised as it was forecast rain, so i seized the opportunity and headed down to the plot. I took the rotavator with me and finished off the bottom of Plot 2 where i plan to plant some sweetcorn as it’s nice and sheltered and gets lots of sun.
By lunchtime it had clouded over and started to rain so i sought refuge in the shed. The plan was to get my Onions and Garlic planted so i waited until it settled down. After about half an hour it was torrential so i packed up and went home. It stayed like this all day and throughout the night.
Woke up at 6.30am and thought it looked a bit dark before realising i’d lost an hour due to the clocks going forward. The weather seemed a bit more settled although it was still overcast and thought i’d lose another weekend due to bad weather.
By 9am the sun came out and it felt quite warm and spring-like. After dropping my daughter off at work i went to the garden centre and bought myself a new fork, some Gladioli and a few bits and pieces before heading off to the plot.
Finally got the Onions and Garlic in the first 2 beds which was a relief as i was beginning to think i’d never get a decent weekend what with last weeks snow and yesterdays torrent.
I’ve read that birds are a problem pulling Onions and Garlic out in the early stages so i covered the beds with some plastic netting. This is one of the great advantages of having a bed system as they are easy to prepare and plant stuff, plus a few screws around the sides helps secure the nets.
Shaun from next door came onto the plot and gave me some Chrysanthemum cuttings so i got these planted along the borders along with the Gladioli. I’m going to plant a lot of flowers alongside the vegetables to add plenty of colour to what is a pretty barren wasteland after all the digging and clearing. I’m told flowers and vegetables go hand in hand encouraging the good bugs to kill off the bad ones.
Finally checked out the Rhubarb after all the frosts and bad weather and it’s looking good. Shortly after planting it we got some really bad frosts for about a week and i thought it would see it off but it hasn’t.
Finally went home when the sun started to drop behind the trees and was shocked to find it was 7.30 pm. This clock going forward milarky always catches me out but at least i’ll be able to visit the plot during the weekdays after work which will free up the weekends to do more family things.
